Why are mushrooms often called a ‘superfood’?

Mushrooms are often referred to as a ‘superfood’ because they are one of the world’s richest natural sources of polysaccharides, more specifically beta-glucans, which have been shown to possess a multitude of adaptogenic qualities that support immunity, wellbeing and healthy cell growth.

What is an adaptogen?

As the name suggests, adaptogens help the body to adapt, protect and restore its innate immunity and health. Biological, environmental, emotional and physical stressors in life can overwhelm the body’s ability to cope, causing poor health and even illness. Adaptogens act as biological response modifiers (BRMs) that restore balance and normal metabolic processes by modulating the release of stress hormones from the adrenal glands.

Mushrooms are naturally rich, adaptogenic plant-based foods that have been popularly used for thousands of years in many traditional medicines, such as Ayurvedic and Chinese healing traditions. Today, adaptogens are also popular in Western holistic communities and in modern medicine as a way to boost immune health.

What is the difference between polysaccharides and beta-glucans?

Polysaccharides are a class of carbohydrates, including starch, malt dextrin, chitin, glycogen and cellulose. Polysaccharides come in different structures, dependant on the substance, with some consisting of alpha-glucans and some consist of beta-glucans. The polysaccharides from mushrooms mainly consist of beta-glucans which are a highly active compound with medicinal functions.

Why is organic important?

All Dr Noel’s medicinal mushroom powders are ‘certified organic,’ which means they meet the top organic standards around the world, assuring you of the quality of our ingredients and sustainable production. They are guaranteed to be free from heavy metal, synthetic fertilizers, hormones, genetic modification, pesticides, binders, fillers, additives, or artificial ingredients, so you know exactly what you are consuming as a naturally rich and pure nutrient source.

Unlike convention farming which relies on chemical intervention to fights pests and weeds and to improve plant nutrition, organic farming relies on natural principles like biodiversity and composting to produce healthy food. Organic farming is recognized as the most effective approach for agricultural sustainability and food safety.

What part of the mushroom is best to consume? What do I look for on labels?

As mushroom farmers and microbiologists we can confirm the whole fruiting body is the most beneficial part of the mushroom to consume since it contains the vast majority of polysaccharides and beta-glucans.

1.   Look for products like ours that are 100% pure fruiting body, with no fillers, additives, colours or preservatives, grown on natural organic waste materials. This is the way organic mushrooms have traditionally been grown and consumed throughout the ages, wildcrafted from the forests.

2.   Look for how your powders are grown. Mushrooms rich in nutrients must be grown on the right substrate and ideally this consists of traditional native timbers such as Beech, organic rice powder, rice grain and hardwood chips, or sawdust, dependant on the species. Some mushroom supplements are made by simply grinding up mushroom mycelium that has been grown on brown rice. The final product of mycelium on grain contains a non-significant quantity of the beneficial compounds. Avoid these products.

3.   The extraction process is also important. Milling at a low temperature is best as it means the in-soluble chitin fibre in the mushroom can effectively be broken down to ensure the valuable polysaccharides and beta-glucans, can be easily absorbed by the body. Hot water extraction is the most traditionally accepted way to extract the polysaccharides, including beta-glucans. These beta-glucans are the compounds responsible for the mushrooms immune boosting benefits.

What’s the difference between organically cultivated and wild grown mushrooms?

Organically cultivated mushrooms are ethically and sustainably grown and harvested in greenhouses, in their native habitat. Wild grown mushrooms are those sourced and harvested from their natural forest environment. These days only Chaga and Turkey Tail grow wild in the forest.

Our Chaga and Turkey Tail mushrooms are wild grown and ethically harvested from the Heilongjiang forest and Daxing’anling mountains.

Our Maitake, Shiitake, Reishi and Lion’s Mane are ethically cultivated in certified organic, reputable Di-Tao growing farms in their native Fujian and Zhejiang province. They are far from any cities and urban pollution. The mushrooms are cultivated in special sheltered greenhouses and grown on sterilised sawdust from traditional native timbers such as Beech, organic rice powder, rice grain and hardwood chips.  At maturity the mushrooms are harvested by hand and sent to the laboratory for testing, drying and milling to powder.

What’s the difference between the powders and simply eating mushrooms whole?

We love fresh mushrooms and encourage you to enjoy them in every way possible as a powerful superfood. Our powders offer a potent, easy way to enjoy all the benefits of medicinal mushrooms when you’re on the go. Dr Noel’s Mushroom Powder have a long shelf life (60 days once opened) and are 100% water soluble which means they can be simply added to your favourite hot or cold meal, or drink to increase overall well-being.

Since our powders are concentrated, made from pure, fruiting body, which is the most nutrient rich part of the mushroom, they offer significantly more health benefits then eating mushrooms in their raw form.  All the immune boosting compounds in medicinal mushrooms are released through the extraction process which means our powders  are highly effective and easily absorbed by the body.

Why do you use cropping houses to grow some of your mushrooms?

We use cropping houses to grow some species of our organic mushrooms because it allows us to carefully cultivate and control the quality, as well as provide consistency from batch to batch in nature-identical conditions. A cropping house is similar to a sheltered greenhouse, providing protection from natural elements such as wind and rain. We grow and harvest our mushrooms with great care to ensure a superior uptake of nutrients. These controlled environments mimic the mushrooms natural conditions, ensuring they have a similar nutrient profile to wild mushrooms.

Why is it important to have standardised mushroom powders?

We want you to know exactly what you are consuming. Standardizing Dr Noel’s Mushroom Powder means we maintain quality control in the cultivation, harvesting, drying and packing process to ensure our mushroom powders are a premium consistency with every single batch.

We guarantee all of Dr Noel’s Mushroom Powder have been rigorously tested to deliver exactly what they promise on the label, including accurate percentages of polysaccharides and beta-glucans.

How are Dr Noel’s Mushroom Powder made?

All the bioactive components in medicinal mushrooms are locked up in the cells of the mushroom. The cell walls are composed of chitin which is the compound that makes up the exoskeleton of crabs, prawns and lobsters. As humans, we do not have the ability to break down this chitin ourselves, so we have to heat it, by boiling the mushrooms in water, steam sterilising them, grilling them, or brewing them to make tea. Other methods include extraction with alcohol, or dual extraction, a combination of hot water and alcohol extraction. All these methods extract the polysaccharides, including beta-glucans, from the mushrooms.

Our mushroom powders are made from the whole fruiting body of the mushroom which contains the vast majority of the beta-glucans. In our process the whole mushroom is dried, screened, granulated, milled and steam sterilised at a minimum of 110 degrees Celsius for forty minutes. The resulting powder is then screened again and packaged.

Rigorous testing protocols are undertaken at each stage in the preparation our powders to test for:

·        Heavy metals

·        Pesticide residues

·        Microbal contamination

In addition, each batch of mushrooms used to make our mushroom powders must have a minimum level of beta-glucans in the final product. Dr Noel’s Mushroom Powder are made from whole fruiting bodies grown organically with standardised processes for growing, harvesting, drying and packaging, producing a consistent product.

Why are some of Dr Noel’s Mushroom Powders different gram weights?

We don’t believe in additives or fillers and since some mushroom species have different densities to others, our bottles when full, have different weights. Dr Noel’s Reishi, Shiitake, Lion’sMane, Turkey Tail, Maitake and Mushroom Blend are weighted at 80g, while our Chaga is weighted at 60g and the Cordyceps at 100g.

Chaga is naturally the lightest mushroom species, forming a loose texture when milled and Cordyceps is the heaviest, resulting in a firm dense powder. Both are equally as potent, despite their different weights, so you can enjoy the same serving amount for maximum health benefits!

Why are your bioactive ingredient percentages higher than many other powder brands?

We offer a high-quality concentrated powder, packed with bioactive immune boosting compounds. Since our mushrooms are grown on organic farms that we own, it enables us to control the growth process and ensure they are harvested at the optimum time to maximise nutrient uptake. We rigorously test and manage the quality control to bring you a consistently high potency range of powders.

How many active ingredients are there in your powders?

The range of active compounds in Dr Noel’s Mushroom Powder varies, dependant on the mushroom species.  Our powders contain the maximum amount of polysaccharides and beta-glucans and we guarantee the concentration ratios. Below is a summary, the higher the phyto-nutrients the better they are for you:

No. Our powders are made from 100% pure mushroom fruiting bodies without any fillers or additives, just as it has been done traditionally for centuries. There’s no residual grains, starch, mycelium, or fillers contained in our powders.
